Position Overview:

Mathematica seeks a Medicaid Financial Data Analyst with an interest in Medicaid policy and programs at the state or federal level to support current and emerging analytics work. The role involves working on 1-3 projects simultaneously, often requiring collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and direct client contact. Project areas may include Medicaid enrollment, managed care programs, value-based purchasing, long-term services, and support, delivery and quality of services for beneficiaries, and outcomes of innovative programs and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead or actively participate in project teams focusing on the financial impact and sustainability of Medicaid policies and programs.
  • Apply rigorous analytic thinking to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of quantitative data.
  • Develop expertise in Medicaid data, policy, and programmatic areas.

Specific Project Activities:

  • Assist with quantitative analyses using Medicaid enrollment, claims/encounter, financial, and program data to support program monitoring, improvement, or evaluation.
  • Participate in decisions regarding analysis design and methodology.
  • Review policy, program, and data documentation to develop technical specifications for analyses.
  • Work with developers to compile and analyze data.
  • Investigate data to identify quality issues, patterns, or other findings.
  • Translate analysis findings into actionable information to support data-driven decision-making for Medicaid policies and programs.
  • Provide technical assistance to federal and state Medicaid stakeholders on data collection, monitoring, and reporting programs.
  • Author client memos, technical assistance tools, issue briefs, chapters of analytic reports, user manuals, and webinar presentations summarizing findings.

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in data analytics, public policy, economics, statistics, finance, or a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of experience in a financial analyst, actuarial, auditing, or similar role.
  • Experience conducting quantitative analysis work in a health setting, with preference for Medicaid experience.
  • Strong foundation in quantitative analysis, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, and high attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid enrollment, claims, financial, or program data preferred.
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise policy and technical memos and documents for diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail; flexibility to manage multiple priorities under deadlines.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Anticipated annual base salary range of $70,000 – $95,000.
